Practice with this Academic Essay Action Plan Worksheet to work through a few of the steps involved in essay assignment writing and to develop a hypothetical plan. By completing 10 exercises, you develop skills needed in several steps of an action plan, and get familiar with judging how much time you need to complete an essay from start to finish.

Instructions

For each of the exercises below, follow the instructions in each exercise, and answer any questions proposed to you. For exercises 5-9, you need a completed essay to evaluate. It can be one of your own or one you find online.

  • Choose a topic for an academic essay. You may choose to create a topic for any type of essay format with which you are familiar, such as compare and contrast, cause and effect, autobiographical or another format. Write the topic in the below space.

  • For the topic you choose in the previous exercise, write down your initial thoughts in as much detail as possible.

  • Does the topic require you to conduct additional research? If yes, what types of sources do you think you might use?

  • Create an outline for an essay on the topic you selected in exercise #1 using the thoughts you wrote down in exercise #2.

  • Use an essay of your own that is already written, or find an example of an academic essay online. Read through it with a critical eye. Does the essay adhere to a logical structure? Explain.

  • Use an essay of your own that is already written, or find an example of an academic essay online. Read through it with a critical eye. Does the essay present a clear understanding with thoughts fully developed? Explain.

  • If you were creating an action plan for an academic essay assignment that is due four weeks from today, what would your plan look like with respect to dated goals? Assume you need to conduct additional research. Using days and weeks needed for completion times, explain how you would break up the completion of each step in writing an essay.
